When looking at post-16 options I knew I wanted to focus my studies solely on my chosen skill sector, so after leaving grammar school at 16, I joined The Bournemouth & Poole College on the full time BTEC Level 3 IT course. Whilst studying this course, I was introduced to apprenticeships as an alternative to university and I decided that this was the path I was more inclined to take. Despite briefly considering university, something about it never really appealed to me.
I spent the summer holiday between my first and second year of College completing an internship in my chosen field. I found that I benefitted far greater from being in the practical environment, learning on the job and receiving mentoring by those already in the career I wanted to pursue. This solidified my decision that an apprenticeship was the right pathway for me. When I completed my two-year BTEC Level 3 IT course, I progressed straight onto the Software Developer Technician apprenticeship which I now only have a few more months left before I finish!
